IT ALL BEGAN WITH A WAFFLE IRON
Every year at “Våffeldagen”, a Swedish tradition of having waffles, we are reminded of how it all started. In 1957, Eleiko was a Swedish manufacturer of small kitchen appliances such as waffle irons, when an inspired idea forever changed the company’s direction. Eleiko’s factory supervisor, Mr. Hellström was an avid weightlifter frustrated with barbells constantly bending and breaking, and was convinced Eleiko could make a better solution. He gained approval from Mrs. Johansson, the managing director, to pursue the project and worked closely with a Swedish steel company to formulate special hardened steel – a proprietary mix perfected over time and still in use today. The barbell appropriately received a waffle-pattern knurling, a nod to the company’s history. In 1963 Eleiko’s strong yet flexible bars were the first to stand up to the rigorous demands of entire competition untarnished. The Eleiko story is filled with historic moments, notable innovations, and innovative product developments.
